BBC Scotland was established on 14 March 1952 as the 'BBC TV Service Scotland' - later 'BBC1 Scotland' and 'BBC2 Scotland' when a second national station was established in 1964. The two stations have its own team of channel directors/announcers based at Pacific Quay in Glasgow, providing a localised service for Scotland's five million inhabitants.
BBC Scotland has a considerable amount of autonomy from the main London operation, and provides opt outs in prime time for local programming, such its soap opera River City. BBC Scotland have additional offices in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inveness, Dundee and Dumfries, and also operate two national radio stations - BBC Radio Scotland and the Gaelic-language BBC Radio nan Gàidheal - as well as BBC Alba, a digital-only station providing Gaelic language output for 12 hours per day as well as opt outs on Thursday evening BBC2 Scotland and children's programming during weekday mornings. BBC Scotland also contribute significantly to network output, such as Film 2010, The Weakest Link and Waterloo Road.
