BBC 2W was a digital-only station, which broadcast on weekday evenings in place of the analogue BBC2 Wales schedule. It showed English-language programmes of Welsh origin only, replacing sports programmes or popular series which continued to be shown on analogue, and across the rest of BBC2 in the UK. The station carried its own live continuity, whilst a separate channel director controlled the continuing analogue service.
BBC 2W was launched on 5 November 2001 amid the increased interest in digital-only services at the time, and it used presentation unique to the station. Following the 2007 rebranding of BBC2, 2W continued to use only adapted versions of network idents, even using network Christmas presentation by 2008. The channel finally came to an end on 2 January 2009, for reasons of cost, and in preparation for the digital switchover in Wales -- meaning the analogue/digital split would disappear.
