BBC Learning Zone

Through the Night on BBC Two...

Launched in 1995, the BBC Learning Zone broadcasts in the early hours of weekday mornings on BBC Two. The service provides teachers and students with an extensive range of BBC Schools programming. With the decline of Schools programming during the day, the BBC Learning Zone is now one of the few remaining educational programming blocks.

Acorn Ident

The original Learning Zone ident featured various educational themed items floating behind a cut-out '2' (a window on the world of learning if you will). Then in October 1997 this ident was launched and almost 12 years later it can still be found introducing BBC Learning Zone programmes today. Featuring an acorn falling from a grand oak tree and eventually starting to grow into a tree itself, this ident is the last presentational element still remaining from the 1997 rebrand.

The Most Pointless DOG on TV?

Viewers of the Learning Zone will note the presence of a BBC Two watermark in the top left corner of the screen. This is often seen as the most unnecessary DOG (digital on-screen graphic) on television as everyone who needs to know surely knows that the Learning Zone can be found on BBC Two. It's also worth noting that the DOG has never been updated, so the 1997 logo is still used despite it now being several years out of date.
