Until March 2009, North Tonight was the main evening news programme covering northern Scotland, as part of the STV (North) broadcasting area - formerly Grampian Television.  Before 1980, it was known as 'Grampian Today', and before that 'News and Views'.  The main programme is broadcast from studios in Aberdeen, and there are also studios in Inverness and Dundee, as well as a politcal presence in Edinburgh and London.  The editorial area is geographically the largest of any ITV region in the UK.

Since 8 January 2007, the main evening programme has operated a localised Tayside opt for viewers in Dundee, Perthshire, Angus and north-east Fife - whilst viewers in the North East, the Highlands and Islands continue with a localised opt from Aberdeen.  News programming has now been rebranded as 'STV News', with the main early evening programme renamed as 'STV News at 6', along with the separate programme of the same name for the STV (Central) broadcasting area - formerly Scottish Television.
