Television Wales and West

Television Wales and the West (TWW) was the British "Independent Television" contractor for the franchise area serving 'South Wales and West of England' from 1956 to 1968.  The franchise was awarded 26 October 1956, however transmissions started only on 14 January 1958. Geography required that the 'South Wales and West of England' franchise would be operated differently from any other franchise, as VHF transmissions from one side of the Bristol Channel could easily be received on the other. This resulted in TWW setting up a 'dual franchise', with a service for South Wales originating from Cardiff, and a service for the 'West of England' from Bristol - together with a common 'General Service'.

Granada in Wales

As ITV transmissions began in the north-west of England several years before the north of Wales received a service of its own in 1962, Granada often transmitted Welsh-language programmes in the afternoon to cater for its Welsh speaking audience.

Teledu Cymru Wales (West and North) Television - WWN

Teledu Cymru/WWN began broadcasting on 14 September 1962, after having won the franchise the previous June, and is the only ITV station to close due to financial difficulties. In 1964, TWW took over providing a service to the north of Wales, maintaining the 'Teledu Cymru' identity until Harlech won the next franchise round to broadcast to the whole of Wales (and the Westcountry) in 1968.
